Meet the students you are supporting today!

We hope you are inspired by the amazing achievements of these young students. Through sheer determination, hard work, and resilience, they earned Program of Academic Exchange (PAX) scholarships to finish their last year of high school in the United States. This is an opportunity available to only a few of their peers in Somaliland, and we are excited to see how far their dreams of education take them. I hope you can see why we hold these students in the highest esteem for their hard work and achievements.

Sado Mustafe joined Burao Academy from Urtehagen Orphanage with a full sponsorship from a generous member of Friends of Burao Academy. Exceedingly bright and determined to succeed, she is a natural leader. She is self-assured, and has goals and aspirations to change her circumstances for the better. Sado’s high grades earned her a spot on this year’s honor role.

Khadar Mubark has maintained a 4.0 grade point average at Burao Academy since he was enrolled in 2021. He is from a single-parent household in a remote village, and his family was unable to provide for his monthly tuition of $180 US. Kadar’s exceptional academic record has earned him a merit-based award that pays for half of his annual tuition. His family’s situation has always motivated Khadar to succeed academically. When other students go home to enjoy their day off, staff and teachers often see him in a classroom studying for hours.

Hashi Mohamed has a passion for learning and puts a lot of effort into his assignments and other school activities. Since joining Burao Academy, he has been consistently awarded merit-based tuition assistance. Hashi takes responsibility for his academic and personal growth, and seeks to help his classmates with assignments in effort to give back to his school community

Awo Mohamed’s tenacity and work ethics have earned her praise from staff and teachers alike. She is a kind, engaging, and curious student who helps make the classroom a lively environment. She challenges herself at every opportunity, and her cheerful nature and openness to feedback means that she's always learning and growing as a student. Awo has contributed to our vibrant campus life by organizing soccer tournaments for Burao Academy girls. She is interested in business and has demonstrated the skills of a competent and responsible entrepreneur by managing students’ snack shop – keeping track of inventory, funds, and making decisions about new products to offer.
