Abdiel Jeremi, Burao Academy teacher since 2022
Abdiel Jeremi is from Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia and came to Burao Academy in early 2022 as a volunteer. Inspired by his grandmother who was a teacher, he is passionate about sharing knowledge with and helping others. After graduating from college, his research on where to volunteer led him to Burao Academy. He was promoted to a full-time teacher within months of joining the school.
“I came here to grow and gain different perspectives from other cultures. Teaching at Burao Academy allows me to grow by developing my classroom management skills, increasing my confidence, and connecting with students and parents. My passion for teaching matches students’ aspirations to learn. I am able to introduce new ways of motivating and guiding students through new concepts to ensure that students do not just memorize the material, but they can apply theories in the real world. During the school break, I have the chance to travel to other parts of East Africa. There is a great opportunity here for teachers who are interested in giving back and improving their teaching credentials.”

TEACHING AT BURAO ACADEMY
We believe that teaching is one of the few fields where an individual can inspire future generations, and we need teachers who can inspire future generations to dream, in a region where hope can be hard to come by. Burao Academy is an English medium school that provides a rigorous Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) curriculum along with practical training and application in theories of thought and logic. We are looking for outstanding educators who are passionate about making a positive impact on Somali youth and helping them achieve their dreams.
FUNDRAISERS
We are small team that's dedicated to ensuring every dollar we receive has a direct impact on the school. To minimize overhead, we need volunteers to host fundraising events or donation drives for student sponsorship and school supplies.

STORYTELLERS
We have great opportunities for both experienced and aspiring writers to help us capture the educational journey of Burao Academy students, and communicate it through the Burao Academy newsletter.
